Fifty bright stars from New Zealand publication date: Feb 6, 2008 The following are about 50 interesting New Zealand wines tasted recently. It's perhaps significant that whites do not seriously outnumber reds nowadays (one more sign of climate change?). Of course there are dozens if not hundreds of labels on perfectly satisfactory and very popular Marlborough Sauvignon but I have noted only those Sauvignons that seem to be a bit out of the ordinary. Look out for my NZ overview in free for all and the Financial Times on Saturday. REDS Schubert, Block B Pinot Noir 2006 Wairarapa 17.5 Drink2008-12 I was very impressed by this offering from Kai Schubert, who studied and worked in Germany, including a stint mit Loosen as well as in Oregon and California. Sweet but not sickly, dense but not chewy, lively with many subtle layers. Should age well. Mainly the Dijon 115 clone apparently. |
